When Phyl, RN describes herself, she says she is soft-spoken, reserved, but adventurous, a wife and mother of two growing boys, fueled by faith and family. Her hobbies include travel, cooking, DIY projects, and fitness, but her true calling has always been nursing.

Her journey began in the Bahamas, where she earned both her associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing before training and working as a registered midwife. “Being raised by a nurse had a huge influence on my career choice,” Phyl recalls. “I grew up watching my mom care for patients with compassion and skill, and she always seemed to know exactly how to nurse us back to health. Nursing felt like a natural path.”

She worked in various specialties from surgical nursing to mental health before finding her passion in maternity and obstetric care. Personal experiences and professional exposure fueled her desire to support women and families during some of life’s most important moments.

Why Move to the U.S.?

Though she loved island life, Phyl wanted broader opportunities for her family. “Growing up in a third-world country has many advantages, like resilience and life skills, but it also comes with limitations in growth opportunities and access to modern practices,” she explains. “I wanted my kids to experience more, and I wanted to explore modern healthcare firsthand.”

That aspiration led her straight to Global Nurse Partners, where our team provided the guidance and support she and her family needed to start their new life in the U.S.

Choosing Direct Hire Over Staffing Contracts

Relocating internationally is complex, especially with a family. Phyl chose direct hire for stability, continuity, and a process that considered her family’s needs. “Global Nurse Partners guided me and my family every step of the way,” she shares. “We discussed housing, my husband’s work, and my kids’ schools. We received hands-on help with government appointments and even transportation through a local concierge.”

Practical details, like prepaid FedEx labels for important documents and a welcome week itinerary, made the relocation process seamless. Even years later, Phyl can reach out for support whenever needed.

The Support That Made the Difference

Throughout her journey, Global Nurse Partners provided a holistic approach, guiding her through licensure and immigration, coordinating onboarding at her new hospital, and offering guidance on cultural and practical adjustments. “I never felt pressured or rushed,” she says. “I felt heard, supported, and empowered to make decisions for myself and my family.”

Life After the Move

The transition was not without challenges. Learning new procedure protocols and mastering electronic health records took time. But a supportive orientation program and ongoing encouragement helped Phyl adapt.

Professionally, she achieved significant milestones, including a nomination for the prestigious Daisy Award, which honors exceptional nurses. Personally, her family has flourished. Her husband earned his first professional license, and her children are thriving in academics and sports. Phyl herself is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing in education, with plans to transition from bedside nursing to professional development in the hospital setting.

Looking Back and Forward

Reflecting on her journey, Phyl says, “I am grateful I chose to move to the U.S. It broadened my skills and knowledge, exposed me to new medical technologies, and gave my family opportunities we could only dream of before. The support from Global Nurse Partners made it possible.”
